We have received news that Vadim Kuramshin, the human rights activist and lawyer for prisoners' rights, falsely accused of bribery and corruption in Zhambylskaya Oblast, Kazakhstan, has started a hunger strike. This is a desperate and valiant attempt to get justice and insist on his basic democratic rights after being held in jail for six months already.
We are aware that the case against Vadim Kuramshin resumes this week and urge you to ensure that it is finally brought to its long overdue close.
We demand the immediate release of Vadim Kuramshin and the dropping of all charges against him.
We demand that those who have tried to sentence him to years in prison on the basis of false evidence and trumped up charges should themselves be held to account for their actions.
Please inform us on progress with these demands.
There are supporters of Campaign Kazakhstan in fifty countries on all five continents. We will make even more noise internationally if these demands are not immediately acceded to.
Campaign Kazakhstan will also continue to fight against any government entering talks or any business or political relations with the Kazakhstan regime until genuine democracy is established in that country.

Further to our previous letter dated July 27 regarding the human rights lawyer Mr Vadim Kuramshin, we understand that his trial, on false charges of bribery and corruption in Zhambylskaya Oblast Kazakhstan, is to resume in full this week. We note that you have not responded to our request for updates about the situation.

We demand that Mr Kuramshin is immediately released from prison and that all of the completely false charges against him are dropped.

We will continue to monitor this issue closely and to publicise developments in Mr Kuramshin's case in particular and the situation in regards to human and democratic rights in Kazakhstan more generally.

Failure to meet these demands will meet with further escalation of the activity of Campaign Kazakhstan and it's supporters across the world, including here in Melbourne, Australia where already two city councillors, amongst others, have been monitoring and publicising the situation.

Further repression of, or recriminations against Mr Kuramshin for his legitimate and essential work will be met with a similar response.

Yours in protest,

Kirk Leonard,

To The Kazakh Authorities,
Drop all charges against human rights lawyer Vadim Kuramshin and free him now. If you do not do this immediately, your country can expect very public and extended protests outside its Missions to the UN and the office of the Consulate General this very week in New York City by many human rights activists. Kazakhstan will become the shame of the human rights community.

Free Vadim Kuramshin Now! Drop all Charges Now!

The injustice against civil rights lawyer Vadim Kuramshin must be stopped, it is an affront to the democratic rights of all mankind.
The false charges against him must be dropped, and he must be released with full freedom immediately. Those who charged him with false allegations and imprisoned him and kept him from trial must be punished, removed from their positions so that they may not abuse their authority again.
We will continue to spread word of this injustice until it is rectified.
